Why do I need a yearly eye exam if I don’t have anything wrong?

More than just updating your prescription, yearly eye exams are essential for detecting eye diseases that often show no symptoms in their early stages. Early detection is one of the most effective ways to slow or prevent the progression of chronic conditions—proving that the old saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” still holds true.

Take glaucoma, for example—a disease that typically has no symptoms early on. It’s often caused by elevated intraocular pressure, and even at dangerously high levels, most patients feel nothing. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to optic nerve damage, permanent vision loss, and eventual blindness. Regular eye exams are key to catching it (and many other conditions) before damage occurs.

Getting the most out of your visit with your eye doctor

At Owen Eye Care, we believe great care starts with communication—and that means listening. We want you to feel comfortable, heard, and cared for during your visit. Throughout your exam, we’ll keep track of your concerns so we can loop back at the end and talk through everything we found, along with any next steps.

At your appointment, your doctor will go over your health history and intake forms. If it’s your first time seeing us, it really helps to bring your current glasses and contact lens boxes (for both eyes), so we can compare prescriptions and, when possible, keep you in a brand that’s already working well for you.

We’ll check your vision using a digital phoropter, which helps us accurately see if your prescription has changed. We'll also get a close-up look at your eye health with a slit lamp, a microscope that lets us examine parts of the eye like the eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, lens, iris, vitreous, retina, and optic nerve. Every now and then we may need to dilate your pupils to get a better view of the back of the eye.

We also offer retinal imaging, which can sometimes replace dilation. These detailed ultra-wide photos help us spot changes in your eyes over time, so we recommend getting them done once a year.

If we notice anything that needs a closer look, we may do a few more tests—like using our OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) to get highly detailed images of the optic nerve, macula, or cornea. This makes measurements and helps us catch and manage conditions early.
To check your eye pressure (important for catching glaucoma), we use the iCare tonometer—no air puff! Most people don’t even feel it.

After your exam, if you’re interested, one of our optician-stylists will sit down with you. They’ll walk you through your vision benefits, discuss lens recommendations, and help you find frames that fit your style—or make sure you’re set with contact lenses and provide you quotes. They’ll make it easy, helpful, and maybe even fun.

Our goal is to make your visit as smooth, informative, and comfortable as possible—so you leave feeling confident about your vision and your care

Ophthalmic Lens Brands We Offer:
Shamir and Varilux

Although we typically favor Shamir lenses for their cutting-edge designs and advanced coatings, we are also proud to offer Varilux, a globally recognized leader in progressive lens technology known for exceptional quality and comfort. We are able to use other brands as well so if you love a lens design outside of the Shamir or Varilux brands let us know and we’re happy to accommodate as we can.

Shamir lenses come with durable scratch-resistant coatings and premium anti-reflective options like Glacier Plus and Glacier Expression, which help reduce glare, resist smudges and scratches, and provide strong UV protection. Their progressive lens design, Autograph Intelligence, is personalized to your prescription, frame, and lifestyle, delivering smooth vision at all distances while minimizing eye strain. For drivers, Shamir Drive Intelligence enhances night vision by cutting glare from headlights and streetlights, improving safety and comfort.

Varilux lenses, on the other hand, are celebrated for their innovative technologies that promote seamless transitions between near, intermediate, and far vision. Features such as Xtend Technology widen the near-vision zone, while Physio Enhanced boosts clarity and contrast in various lighting conditions. Varilux lenses are designed to reduce distortion and provide stable, natural vision—making them a trusted choice for many multifocal lens wearers.

By offering both Shamir and Varilux, we provide you with a range of premium lens options tailored to fit your unique vision needs and lifestyle, whether you're on the computer at the office, driving, or enjoying everyday activities.
